Dare to Compare Week! Day One – Dark Purple

Happy Monday! I’m very excited because this week is Dare to Compare Week here at Adventures in Polishland! One of my highest requested blogs is the comparison post, so I figured I would dedicate this week to that. From today until Friday I will share three nail polishes from a color family each day and see how they match up. I tried to pick a variety of colors from a mix of brands so that everyone can find something within budget. First up is dark purple, a color I have a lot of in my collection. Let’s see how the first three compare!

Today’s Dare to Compare polishes are (from left to right) OPI in Lourve Me Lourve Me Not, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Pronto Purple, and elf in Royal Purple. As you can see, they look quite similar in the bottle. Each is a dark purple with shimmer. The true test comes when they are on the nails! First I’ll show you each polish individually, and then how they look side by side.

Above you can see each polish side by side. From left to right is the elf, the Sally Hansen, and the OPI. These polishes are not dupes [“dupe” = duplicate in nail polish lingo!], but they are very close. Elf’s Royal Purple is definitely the lightest shade of the bunch, and has the most shimmer. Pronto Purple from Sally Hansen is clearly the darkest of the three. Although these do vary from one another in terms of color, you may find you prefer one shade over the rest. However, if you are looking for a great dark purple in general, I don’t think you can go too wrong with any of these! The elf formula wasn’t the best, but with a $2 price tag it is not much of a compromise. If I had to choose just one, I would personally go with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Pronto Purple, for the great formula and mid-range price tag!

Which dark purple nail polish is your favorite?! What is more important to you, price or formula?!

Second Chance Purple with e.l.f. Polish

I was so disappointed with yesterday’s manicure that I took it off the first chance I got. Sorry, Revlon, but I’m mad at you! Because I was still feeling purple nails, I tried out the polish I recently got by e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face). After yesterday it was a dream to use this color! I am much happier with the formula, the shade of purple, and the overall manicure.

Royal Purple by e.l.f.

This is the first product from e.l.f. that I’ve ever used. I purchased it off Copious using credits, so I only paid $0.54 of my own money! (Don’t forget, you can get a $10 credit when you join Copious HERE). Normally, these polishes retail for only $2 anyway, so they’re super affordable. The color I purchased is called Royal Purple, and it is a beautiful, shimmery hue. It’s a bit lighter than I thought it would be, but I really like it. I would say it is a more on the magenta side than a deep purple.

In terms of application, the first coat was a little streaky, but still applied evenly. The second coat took care of any problems I had and looked great! I also really liked the brush for this polish. It was very full, and easy to use. I think the one drawback I have with this polish is that it’s very similar to an OPI I already own called Lourve Me Lourve Me Not. It’s always hard to shop for polish online!

You can really see the shimmer in the bottle here!

All in all, I am MUCH happier with this purple than I was with Revlon’s Impulsive. Sometimes you just need to give your mani a second chance! Have you ever needed to give yourself a second chance mani? What was wrong with the original polish you used?

Somewhat Failed Gradient Nails

Well, friends, not all of my Adventures in Polishland are successful. Last night I attempted the gradient nails trend, and it was more difficult then I thought it would be! What are gradient nails? Click HERE to see what I was going for. Basically, it’s smudging two or more colors together to make them appear blended. I had looked up a few tutorials on how to achieve this effect, and tried one method. I guess it wasn’t the right one for me!

Base of Lacey Lilac from Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear

I began this mani with Lacey Lilac from Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear. I used two coats and let the polish dry completely. Then, I got to work with a makeup sponge and dabbed O.P.I’s Lourve Me Lourve Me Not along the tops of my nails. I’m not sure if it was the polish that didn’t want to cooperate, but it seemed as if the sponge was soaking up the polish instead of putting it on! In the end, I’m not too thrilled with the look I got, but I’m not going to give up. I’ll probably try this out again in a week or two. Here is a photo of my left hand, which looks so much better than my right! What do you think of my mani? Have you tried the gradient trend?

Before I end this post I wanted to announce here that once I reach 50 blog followers I will be hosting a giveaway! So if you want to score some free polish make sure you hit the follow button at the top of the page or sign up to receive updates via email. That button is in the column on the right.
