5 Romantic Reads for Valentine’s Day | Blogger Collaboration

Happy Tuesday! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite romantic books with all of you. I’m not a huge romance reader, but I’ve noticed that this past month I’ve picked up more lovey dovey books than normal. This blog post will feature five of my all-time favorite romance books, and you’ll notice I typically go for light-hearted and cutesy stories. I’ve also teamed up with bloggers Kayla, Amélie, and Colleen who are sharing their picks today, too. Their posts will be linked at the end, so please be sure to check them out!

5 Romantic Reads for Valentine's Day | Blogger Collaboration

5. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

REVIEW | GOODREADS | BUY

My first pick is a young adult contemporary, and is more of a coming-of-age story than a romance. I think this is a great book for those who may not like mushy love stories, because this book features friendship more than traditional love. We follow teen boys Aristotle and Dante as they meet one summer. Both are shy and have trouble expressing their emotions. The book follows their journey, and is a beautiful story. I highly recommend this book!

4. Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

GOODREADS | BUY

I read Stargirl years ago and immediately fell in love with it. This young adult novel takes place in high school, and follows Leo Borlock as he begins to notice the ‘weird’ girl in school. She’s named herself Stargirl, and is often bullied because of her uniqueness. I love this book because it shows how appearances aren’t everything, and how it’s important to stay true to yourself. This is also a very quick read if you’re short on time!

3. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

REVIEW | GOODREADS | BUY

If you like romantic comedies, you need to check out The Rosie Project! This is an adult contemporary novel that follows main character Don Tillman. Don is a scientist, and has similar character traits to Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. One day he decides to begin The Wife Project, because he wants a life partner that meets his very specific criteria. Then he meets Rosie – a woman who doesn’t check any of the boxes on his list. The book follows their journey together to find Rosie’s biological father. It’s cute, funny, and the perfect Valentine’s Day read!

2. Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

REVIEW | GOODREADS | BUY

Another great adult contemporary is Attachments. This is my favorite book from Rainbow Rowell (so far), and follows Lincoln O’Neill at the turn of the 21st Century. Lincoln works in the IT department of a newspaper office, and his job is to monitor the emails of the workers. He becomes enthralled with the emails of Beth and Jennifer, and soon begins to fall for one of them despite never speaking with her in person. This book is adorable, but also deals with some deep issues, too. I think it’s perfect for millennials!

1. The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E. Smith

REVIEW | GOODREADS | BUY

Last but not least, I have to recommend The Geography of You and Me, a young adult contemporary romance. This book is the epitome of cute, but is also extremely well written. It follows two teens in New York City during a blackout. They happen to meet when the power is turned off, but once the city is restored to normal, they aren’t sure how to keep their relationship going. If you’re looking for a quick read with some depth, I highly recommend this one!

That wraps up my top picks for Valentine’s Day! Please make sure to visit my fellow bloggers to see what books they have to recommend for you. You can also leave me a comment with your favorite romantic books! I’d love to know what you recommend, too.

Saran Wrap Ombré Manicure for Valentine’s Day featuring Zoya Nail Polish!

Happy Friday! January is coming to a close soon, and that means Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. I wanted to create a festive manicure for the holiday of love that was a bit different than the looks I’ve created in the past. I got to thinking and came up with what I think is a super fun and easy nail art look! I raided my Zoya Nail Polish stash and found the shades that I needed. Let me show you what I’ve dubbed the Saran Wrap Ombré!

Saran Wrap Ombré Manicure for Valentine's Day featuring Zoya Nail Polish!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

For this manicure, I used an off-white base and five polishes ranging from light pink to red. I used all creme formulas for this manicure. You can choose whatever you have in your collection, but the shades I used, from lightest to darkest, are:

  • Zoya Jacqueline
  • Zoya Dot
  • Zoya Kitridge
  • Zoya Wendy
  • Zoya Rocha
  • Zoya Livingston

All of these polishes are available on Zoya’s website HERE.

Saran Wrap Ombré Manicure for Valentine's Day featuring Zoya Nail Polish! Saran Wrap Ombré Manicure for Valentine's Day featuring Zoya Nail Polish!Saran wrap nail art is super easy to create! I learned this technique from THIS Pin a few years back. All you have to do is paint your nails with a base color (here, Jacqueline). Once your base is dry, layer a coat of another color polish on top of your base and dab a small ball of saran wrap over your nail. You will get a cool marbled effect! Let your nails dry (they will look quite textured) and use a glossy top coat to even out the layers. I used two coats of top coat to get a flawless finish.

Saran Wrap Ombré Manicure for Valentine's Day featuring Zoya Nail Polish! This manicure can be a little messy to create, so I recommend you use separate pieces of saran wrap for each color polish. When you’re finished, take a Q-tip or clean-up brush and go around your cuticles with acetone to remove any excess. You will be left with a beautiful ombré manicure that is tied together with the marbled effect. I think it looks stunning!

All in all, I hope you liked this simple Valentine’s Day manicure featuring Zoya Nail Polish! Of course, you can use the saran wrap technique with any polishes and any colors you choose. I will definitely be using this technique more, as I forgot how easy it is to create and how great it looks! Please let me know in the comments if you’ve ever tried a saran wrap manicure, and what your manicure for Valentine’s Day this year will be!

Valentine’s Day Nail Art | Free Hand Hearts

Happy Saturday! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so I thought it would be fun to create a simple, nail art look. I grabbed two of my favorite nail polishes, and decided a free hand design would be quick and easy. Let me show you the manicure I put together!

Valentine's Day Manicure Valentine's Day Nail ArtTo create this manicure, I started out with a base of Wet ‘n Wild Megalast in On a Trip (full review HERE). Once that was completely dry, I took Rainbow Polish in Wild Orchid (review HERE) and did free hand hearts all over my nails. Hearts are really easy to create – just make a “V” shape and you’re all set! Wild Orchid is one of my favorite indie nail polishes, and I thought the pink base with pink and purple glitters would be perfect for Valentine’s Day! To seal the entire look, I finished up with a layer of butter LONDON Hardwear Top Coat.

All in all, I think this manicure is really cute, and great for Valentine’s Day! I love how quick and easy it is to create, and there is no need to be absolutely perfect with your free hand hearts. This look is also customizable to your personal tastes, as you can choose any colors you wish. Let me know in the comments if you like this look!

Valentine’s Day Skittle Manicure!

Happy Sunday! Today I have a fun post for all of you featuring a Valentine’s Day skittle manicure. What is a skittle manicure, you ask? It’s when each nail is painted differently from all the rest, whether it be all different colors or patterns. I thought a skittle would be a cute idea for Valentine’s Day, and it would help me practice some nail art techniques! Let me show you my Valentine’s manicure!

Valentine's Day Base

I used Sally Hansen Fuchsia Flare as the base color for my manicure, and an accent nail of Zoya Jacqueline. Fuchsia Flare is a beautiful bright pink nail polish that is opaque in two coats. The formula was easy to apply, and spread out evenly. I thought it would make the perfect base for some nail art, especially for Valentine’s Day! I also used a fast dry polish so that I could get to work on the nail art as soon as possible — I don’t like waiting for polish to dry!

Free Hand Heart

The next step was to begin the skittle! I first started out with Fuchsia Flare again, and ever so carefully did a free-hand heart on the accent nail of Zoya Jacqueline. To do so, I wiped off almost all the polish from the brush, and made two sweeps of the polish in a V shape. It was rather simple to do with a steady hand, and I’m thrilled the way it came out!

Next, I completed my manicure using all of the other polishes. It’s very important to make sure your base color is dry before beginning these next steps, or you will experience smudging. Working from pinky to thumb, I first did a french tip with an unnamed red OPI. To do so I used scotch tape as a guideline. Next, I did a glitter gradient on my middle finger using Equinots from A Rhyming Dictionary. I put a dab of the glitter polish at the bottom of my nail near the cuticle, and slowly dragged up the glitters until about half of the nail was covered. On my pointer finger I used Milani Digital to do another scotch tape design, this time in a vertical stripe. The result here wasn’t very good — Digital was not opaque over Fuchsia Flare, and I didn’t get a clean line after removing the tape. Nonetheless, I completed the manicure with a thin coat of Elixir Lacquer A Cool Fool on my thumb nail. This gave that nail a beautiful, holographic shine.

Overall I am loving my Valentine’s Day manicure! There are some imperfections, but that is fine by me. Be sure to try out your own skittle manicure by wearing a different color or design on each nail. It’s a fun way to experiment with new styles and impress your friends. Be sure to share your Valentine’s Day manicures with me on my Facebook page HERE!

Indie Spotlight: The Last of the Time Lords Collection from Lucky 13 Lacquer

Calling all Doctor Who fans! Today I have some awesome polishes to show you from the new collection by Lucky 13 Lacquer called The Last of the Time Lords. This collection is inspired by the revival series of Doctor Who, and you will see characters, episodes, and memorable quotes represented throughout the entire set. I have four of the thirteen polishes to show you. Let’s get started!

IMG_0161 IMG_0164 IMG_0160

First up is A 51st Century Guy, a clear glitter top coat. This polish is filled with small white squares, gunmetal grey hexagonal glitters, and red hearts. I layered two coats over OPI in If You Moust You Moust (see that polish HERE). While the overall formula was great, I had the hardest time getting the hearts out of the bottle and onto my nails. I did everything I could think of to get those hearts out, but they were stuck to the sides of the bottle. I was able to get out just three so I could show you what they look like! I think if you had the full size bottle, it would be easier to fish out the hearts. Besides that issue, however, A 51st Century Guy is a great polish and has a fast-drying formula. I thought layering this over a pink would give me a Valentine’s Day manicure. I love the finished product!

Note: Lucky 13 is aware of the difficulty with the hearts, so until lightweight hearts can be added to the new batch of polishes, the brand is including extra hearts that can be hand placed with each purchase!

Up next is Fantastic! This is another clear glitter top coat, and is filled with tiny black hexagonal glitters, and medium gunmetal grey hexagons. Fantastic! has a good formula – no fishing for glitters with this one! I layered two coats over Zoya Julie for the look you see in the photos. My one gripe with Fantastic! is that it has a strong aroma, but otherwise it’s a great polish. I love the way it makes a pastel purple look edgy. Fantastic! would also liven up a plain black nail polish.

Another polish from The Last of the Time Lords collection is Bowties Are Cool. This polish has a brown shimmer base, and is filled with tiny bronze squares, and red, brown, and caramel colored hexagonal glitters. I knew it would take at least three coats to be opaque on its own, so I layered two coats over Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Mellow Yellow (see that polish HERE). I absolutely love the result! My fingers were sporting a golden yellow combo! Bowties Are Cool has a great formula, and the glitters come out of the bottle with ease. Just as A 51st Century Guy became a Valentine’s Day manicure, Bowties Are Cool is also extremely versatile! Your base color has the power to transform this polish, and you can get a different look every time!

IMG_0222 IMG_0217 IMG_0221

Last but not least is my favorite polish of the bunch, Are You My Mummy? This polish is a clear glitter top coat and is filled with tiny green hexagonal glitters, and orange, brown, and yellow hexagons as well in various sizes. I layered one coat over Illamasqua Rampage. I was absolutely thrilled with Are You My Mummy?! One coat provided great coverage, and the glitters applied very well. This is a great nail polish for the fall, especially when layered over a dark green!

All in all, The Last of the Time Lords collection is extremely versatile and is perfect for Doctor Who aficionados and nail polish lovers, too! This collection can be purchased on the Lucky 13 Lacquer website HERE. Full size bottles are $8 each and mini bottles are $4. Lucky 13 is also offering a special bonus — buy 7 or more polishes from this collection and you will get a bonus bottle! You can also like Lucky 13 Polish on Facebook HERE.

Save More and Make it Mini: OPI in If You Moust You Moust

Happy Wednesday! Today I am excited to be bringing you a lovely pink color to celebrate Pink Wednesday, and to show you a perfect Valentine’s Day polish. If you’re like me, you love to try out a lot of different nail polish colors without spending big bucks. OPI is a great brand, but I don’t like spending up to $8.50 for a full size bottle that will only be used a handful of times. Thankfully, whenever it comes out with a new collection, OPI will release a set of mini polishes so that those of us on a budget can enjoy the collection at a discounted price. As a lifelong Minnie Mouse fan, I knew I just HAD to have the Vintage Minnie Mouse collection mini set. Luckily, I won it in a giveaway over the summer, but it is selling on Amazonright now for just $6.96! That’s an amazing price for three colors and a top coat. Let me show you one of those polishes.

IMG_0154 IMG_0158 IMG_0159

If You Moust You Moust is what I am calling the perfect Valentine’s Day pink! It is a classic pink polish, and I am just in love with it! The formula was great — a bit streaky with the first coat, but evens out well with the second. Just two coats are needed for opacity. I used this polish as the base for a glitter manicure that you will soon see, but it can easily be worn alone. It’s perfect for the office, as it’s bright and feminine, but not too out there. Plus, OPI polishes last a long time without chipping so it is great for the girl on the go! As a pink aficionado, this is one of the best pinks I’ve tried!

If you love this polish and Minnie Mouse as much as I do, I highly suggest going to Amazon and purchasing one of these sets right away. As I’m typing this, there are only 8 more left in stock! Click HEREnow to get it for just $6.96!
