Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette | Review & Swatches

Happy Wednesday! Today I have a full review of the Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette that I recently purchased from Sephora (see my haul HERE). Even though I don’t wear eyeshadow often, I’ve been trying to branch out more. I thought this palette would be perfect, because I’ve heard great things about Smashbox, but also because it’s small enough that I can take it with me whenever I travel. I’ve tested out all of the shades now, so let me go ahead and share swatches and my review with you!

Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette | Review & Swatches

Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette | Review & Swatches Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette | Review & SwatchesThe Full Exposure Travel Palette is a very compact palette. It comes in sleek black packaging that is about the size of a credit card, just a bit thicker. There are eight shadows inside this palette, and a good size mirror. Four of the shadows are shimmers, and four are mattes. I love that you can do so many different eyeshadow looks with just this one palette!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-olz4txVa9QHere are swatches of the four shimmer shades, from left to right: Chocolate Brown, Soft Gold, Light Tan, and Mid-Tone Slate. I’m not loving the formulas on these shimmer shadows, except for Light Tan which is beautiful. I find the others to be a bit on the chalky side, but I’m hoping once I get below the surface of the shadow they will be more blendable. I’m not too mad about this, though, because I am a huge fan of matte shadows!
Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette | Review & SwatchesHere are the matte shades, from left to right: Matte Warm Chocolate Brown, Soft Matte Mid-Tone Tan, Creamy Matte Beige, and Ashy Dark Brown. I am loving each of these shades! They are so pigmented and blend out really nicely. I recently did an eyeshadow look for the daytime using Creamy Matte Beige and Matte Warm Chocolate Brown and it came out really nice. I can’t wait to use these more!

All in all, I’m glad I invested in the Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette. It’s a great little palette to have if you’re starting to get into the eyeshadow world, or if you’re looking to simplify your collection. You can purchase this palette on Sephora’s website HERE for $24.00. Be sure to let me know in the comments if you own or plan on purchasing this palette!

Visualize Your Health Goals with a DIY Star Jar!

Happy Tuesday! Today I’m excited to share with you one of the DIY projects I began at the beginning of this year. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is, of course, to be healthier. I talked all about my goal in THIS blog post, but today I’m sharing how I’m visualizing that goal. Growing up I absolutely loved origami, and last year I purchased some star paper at a Sanrio store in Los Angeles. I decided to finally put that star paper to use and track my health goals in 2016. Let me show you my jar, and tell you how I’m using it!

Visualize Your Health Goals with a DIY Star Jar!

I first got the idea for this star jar from the book community, which uses it to track the books they read throughout the year. I’ve adapted that for my health goals because that is what I personally need to visualize. This year I want to make sure that I am exercising on a regular basis, taking my daily vitamins, and losing some weight along the way. I often feel discouraged that I’m not exercising enough if I skip a day or two, so I’m hoping that when I see a jar filled with stars that represent all the working out I’ve already done, I’ll be more confident. I also want to focus more on non-scale goals, so even though I’ll be tracking my weight weekly, I’m putting more of an emphasis on my overall health.

Visualize Your Health Goals with a DIY Star Jar!Here is a look at my color coding for the star jar. I’ll put in a pink star every day that I work out, a purple star for every day that I take my doctor-recommended vitamins, and a yellow star for every pound I lose. I’m hoping to put in at least 100 pink stars and 200 purple stars by the time the year comes to a close. I’m not putting a goal on weight, just so I don’t dwell on it.

If you’re looking to create your own Health Star Jar, all you need is a jar and star paper. You can get the jar at the dollar store, Target, or upcycle an old food jar. I got mine at Target for $2.29. Star paper can either be purchased at specialty stores or on Amazon HERE. You can also make your own! This video tutorial on YouTube shows you how to make your own star paper and how to fold the paper into stars: LINK.

I hope you enjoyed learning about my Health Star Jar today! I’m always excited when I can put a star in the jar. It’s really helping to motivate me, and I can’t wait to see what it will look like at the end of the year. If you create a Health Star Jar, please tag me on social media so I can see it!

Maybelline BROWdrama Pro Palette | Review & Swatches

Happy Monday! Today I have a review of the new Maybelline BROWdrama Pro Palette. I saw this at CVS a few weeks ago and decided to pick it up because there was a great Maybelline sale going on, and I had coupons to use. I’ve been a loyalist to the Milani Brow Fix Kit for years now, but have been wanting to find another affordable option because the color match to my brows is not perfect. I’m so glad I found the Maybelline BROWdrama! Let me share my thoughts on this fabulous and affordable palette with you!

Maybelline BROWdrama Pro Palette | Review & SwatchesMaybelline BROWdrama Pro Palette | Review & SwatchesI purchased the BROWdrama in the shade 250 Blonde because I have dark blonde hair, and I find anything for brunettes is way too dark for me. The kit comes with a brow wax, brow powder, highlight powder, a double-sided angled brush, and a spoolie brush. I love that you get everything you need for a complete brow look. I would have liked a mini pair of tweezers in the kit, too. That is one benefit that the Milani kit has over this one. That being said, I am very impressed with the quality of this palette. Maybelline BROWdrama Pro Palette | Review & SwatchesHere are swatches of the wax, powder, and highlight. As you can see, the wax is only slightly pigmented. I’ve never used a brow wax before, and I have to say I’m surprised at how much I like it! I apply the wax first, and it does a great job at keeping my brows shaped. I no longer have to use a brow gel! Then I apply the powder, which is the perfect shade for my brows. I’m so glad I finally found a true match! Plus, the powder is great quality. I do not experience any fallout, but it also blends really well. Last but not least is the highlight. This is the one product in the palette I’m not thrilled about because it is a bit on the glittery side. However, it is decent quality and most days I do wear it. I also wanted to mention that I have been using the brushes included in the palette, and they do a great job.

All in all, I’m so glad I picked up the Maybelline BROWdrama Pro Palette! I think it is a great product, especially from the drugstore! I’ve never tried high end eyebrow products, so I don’t know how this compares to those, but it’s definitely one of the best options I’ve tested from the drugstore. You can purchase this palette at your local drugstore on online HERE for $12.99. I definitely recommend it!

SinfulColors SinfulShine Review | Top Coat & Shining Couture

Happy Friday! Today I have a full review of the SinfulColors SinfulShine Top Coat and one polish from the line, Shining Couture. I received both of these polishes in a PinchMe box, and was excited to test them out together. I’ve tried one other SinfulShine polish before (see that review HERE), but I’ve never tried the top coat. I love the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel line, so I was hoping to love this one as well because it is much more affordable. Let me share my thoughts on this nail polish system with you!

SinfulColors SinfulShine Review | Top Coat & Shining CoutureHere is a quick look at what the SinfulShine bottles look like. They are the same as the regular SinfulColors nail polish, but the bottle caps are a chrome finish. Step 1 is on the left, and is the regular nail polish color called Shining Couture. Step 2, on the right, is the SinfulShine Top Coat. Both bottles had the same directions, which were to add two coats.

SinfulColors SinfulShine – Shining Couture SinfulColors SinfulShine – Shining CoutureShining Couture is a blue nail polish with green, bronze, and gold shimmer. The formula is good, but because it is a jelly formula, it is not opaque with two coats. Nonetheless, I then applied the Top Coat in two layers as well. My first impression of this nail polish was that it had a very strong odor. While I’m no stranger to the nail polish smell, this scent was way over the top. In addition, my manicure took a full hour before it was completely dry. That is much longer than I usually have to wait, so I wasn’t happy about that. The main problem, however, was that the polish began peeling off my nails the day after I applied it. That’s right, my manicure didn’t even last 24 hours!

All in all, I’m very disappointed with the SinfulColors SinfulShine line. I think the problem lies in the Top Coat, because I did try a colored polish in the past and didn’t experience any issues. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this product to you, which is definitely a shame for the affordable price. I still recommend the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Top Coat, which is my favorite top coat right now. I wear it over every manicure, and it does an excellent job.

Have you tried the SinfulShine Top Coat? Share your experience in the comments!

Rachel Walker is devoted to God.

She prays every day, attends Calvary Christian Church with her family, helps care for her five younger siblings, dresses modestly, and prepares herself to be a wife and mother who serves the Lord with joy.

But Rachel is curious about the world her family has turned away from, and increasingly finds that neither the church nor her homeschool education has the answers she craves. Rachel has always found solace in her beliefs, but now she can’t shake the feeling that her devotion might destroy her soul.

REVIEW

I’ve been wanting to read Devoted by Jennifer Mathieu ever since I had the opportunity to hear the author speak at BookCon in 2015. As soon as I heard the premise of the book, I knew I would love it. Devoted follows 17-year-old Rachel Walker, whose family is a part of the Quiverfull movement. This is a fundamentalist Christian sect in which children are seen as blessings and procreation is very much promoted. Rachel is one of ten children and her mother is pregnant with another. While Rachel loves her family dearly, she becomes curious about the world outside her own, and begins to explore how ‘worldly’ people live.

I really enjoyed Devoted, and I knew I would because I am fascinated with different religions and how people live their lives in a way that is different from my own. Rachel is a great first-person narrator because she is instantly likable and I was rooting for her from the start. Similarly, Mathieu has a great writing style. It is quite relaxed, and that made Devoted a really quick read.

My main critique of Devoted is that nothing big happens in the story. Perhaps I’ve just been reading more science fiction and fantasy lately, but I didn’t find any sort of climax in the story. Nonetheless, I do appreciate that Devoted focuses on a young woman growing up and making her own choices. The book is truly about her growth, and it’s refreshing to read a young adult novel that praises a young woman’s personal autonomy. While I would have liked a bit more excitement, or even some romance thrown in, looking back I can see how Rachel’s journey is an important one.

Moreover, I also would have liked to learn more about Rachel’s family. Maybe I’m just a bit obsessed with learning about people who practice fundamentalist religions (one of my all-time favorite television shows is Big Love, for example), but I needed more about Rachel’s parents, older sister, and even her older brothers. This is a small critique, but one I want to mention nonetheless.

Overall, I really enjoyed Devoted and am so glad I finally got the opportunity to read it. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who are interested in different religions. If you are looking for a young adult contemporary that isn’t all about romance, this is also a perfect choice. I can’t wait to read more of Mathieu’s work in the future!

Sephora Beauty Insider Loyalty Haul | First Aid Beauty, Smashbox, & More!

Happy Wednesday! Today I’m back with a Sephora Haul! I typically shop at Sephora a few times a year – my birthday, the holidays, and the spring. Every holiday season, Sephora gives a coupon to Beauty Insiders at a value of $15 off a $50 purchase. I knew this coupon was coming, so I splurged on a few items that I needed, and a few others that I wanted to try. Of course, I made sure to shop through Ebates, and earned 8% cash back on my purchase during a Double Cash Back event. I also had a gift card, so I saved quite a bit! Let me go ahead and show you what I picked up at Sephora!

Sephora Beauty Insider Loyalty Haul | First Aid Beauty, Smashbox, & More!

Sephora Beauty Insider Loyalty Haul | First Aid Beauty, Smashbox, & More!First up are the items that I purchased! I usually try to aim for $50 even, but this time I went a bit over that amount. I just decided to get some extra goodies!

  • First Aid Beauty Fab to the Rescue Sampler Kit – I’m traveling this month, so I decided to pick up this skincare sampler kit so I could take it with me on the plane. This kit includes the Ultra Repair Cream, Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask, Face Cleanser, Ultra Repair Lip Therapy, and Ultra Repair Wash. I’m really excited to use these products because I’ve had good luck with the First Aid Beauty brand in the past. I’ll be sure to do a full review on this kit when I can!
  • Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm in Black Tea & Blackberry – I picked up this lip balm because I didn’t own any lip balms that weren’t tinted! I ended up destashing a lot of my old balms, and so a new one was in order. I’ve heard so many beauty gurus rave about this lip balm, so I figured it would be great to have. I’ve been using this for a few weeks now, and really love it!
  • NARS Pencil Sharpener – I’ve had the worst luck with pencil sharpeners, and I needed a new one yet again. Ingrid Nilsen recommend this NARS one in a recent favorites video, and I trust her opinion. Hopefully this sharpener will last for a while!
  • Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette – My big splurge in this haul is a new eyeshadow palette. Now, I don’t wear eyeshadow often, but I’m trying to reach for it more. This palette is absolutely tiny, but holds eight shadows. Four of them are shimmers, and the other four are mattes. This is perfect for travel, and I’ll definitely be packing it when I’m on the go!

Sephora Beauty Insider Loyalty Haul | First Aid Beauty, Smashbox, & More!Next up, I used a coupon code from the Weekly Specials page to score this little makeup bag filled with sample products. While I’m not the biggest fan of foil packets, they are great for travel. I am really excited for the makeup bag, though!  I use pouches for everything in my purse and luggage – cords, pens and pencils, accessories, and more. Always make sure to use a coupon code when you shop at Sephora!

Sephora Beauty Insider Loyalty Haul | First Aid Beauty, Smashbox, & More!Last but not least, I got my three free samples. I love Atelier perfume samples, and I’ve heard great things about Rita Hazan hair care. The last sample on the right is a Peter Thomas mask, so that will be fun to try, too. I have entire drawer of samples in my makeup collection, so these will be added to the pile.

That’s all for my Sephora haul this time around! I always love sharing the new products I picked up with all of you. Shopping at Sephora is special to me, and splurging a few times a year is very fun. Please let me know in the comments what you picked up from the Beauty Insider Loyalty sale! I would love to know!

Book Review | Armada by Ernest Cline

Armada by Ernest Cline

Zack Lightman has spent his life dreaming. Dreaming that the real world could be a little more like the countless science-fiction books, movies, and videogames he’s spent his life consuming. Dreaming that one day, some fantastic, world-altering event will shatter the monotony of his humdrum existence and whisk him off on some grand space-faring adventure.

But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a little escapism, right? After all, Zack tells himself, he knows the difference between fantasy and reality. He knows that here in the real world, aimless teenage gamers with anger issues don’t get chosen to save the universe.

And then he sees the flying saucer.

Even stranger, the alien ship he’s staring at is straight out of the videogame he plays every night, a hugely popular online flight simulator called Armada—in which gamers just happen to be protecting the earth from alien invaders.

No, Zack hasn’t lost his mind. As impossible as it seems, what he’s seeing is all too real. And his skills—as well as those of millions of gamers across the world—are going to be needed to save the earth from what’s about to befall it.

It’s Zack’s chance, at last, to play the hero. But even through the terror and exhilaration, he can’t help thinking back to all those science-fiction stories he grew up with, and wondering: Doesn’t something about this scenario seem a little…familiar?

At once gleefully embracing and brilliantly subverting science-fiction conventions as only Ernest Cline could, Armada is a rollicking, surprising thriller, a classic coming of age adventure, and an alien invasion tale like nothing you’ve ever read before—one whose every page is infused with the pop-culture savvy that has helped make Ready Player One a phenomenon.

BOOK REVIEW

I excitedly received a copy of Armada by Ernest Cline for review from the website Blogging for Books. I requested it after hearing so many amazing things about his famous work Ready Player One, and dove in without knowing anything about it whatsoever. Armada follows teenager Zack Lightman and begins when Zack sees a UFO outside his high school’s window while in math class one day. Seeing a UFO would be disturbing in and of itself, but this particular ship is from the video game he plays called Armada. Zack passes it off as a hallucination, and goes about his video-game filled life.

I was immediately drawn into Armada because of Cline’s relaxed writing style. Zack narrates the story in first-person, and his voice is easy to follow. I absolutely loved the beginning of this book. While I’m not into video games, I was really intrigued with the entire world of the gamer. I liked learning more about Armada and Terra Firma, the two games featured in the story, and it was cool to follow Zack and his friends while they played the games, too.

What truly drew me in, however, was the conspiracy theory! Zack’s father died when Zack was just a baby, and he left behind a lot of his possessions. One of those is a notebook in which he wonders if video games are created by the government in order to train an army without anyone knowing. I was hooked! I wanted this theory to be proven true, and had to keep reading to find out whether it would be.

Unfortunately, the story tapers off in the middle, and about one-third of the way through Armada I got very bored. I had to struggle to continue on despite really liking Zack and the other characters in the novel. However, I’m really glad I stuck through to the end, because the finale is excellent. I love the somewhat unsettling and open-ended conclusion. I also loved the discussion on humanity that Cline brings up to the readers.

Overall, I found Armada to be a fun read, and one that was unique to me as someone who doesn’t know a lot about video game culture. I did find the middle section of the book to drag a lot, and I didn’t like that Cline included too many layers of truths and falsities. In fact, to truly understand the intricately woven web of truths and lies, I would have to graph out the novel. Finally, Armada contains multiple typographical errors and other copyediting mistakes.

I recommend Armada if you are looking for a book centered on video games, aliens, or 1980s pop culture. If you are a big fan of Ready Player One, perhaps go into this book with low expectations. I look forward to reading Ready Player One for the first time, because I know it is so praised and can only top Armada.

Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio | Swatches & Review

Happy Monday! Today I am excited to share with you swatches and a review of the Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio. I purchased this trio directly from Birchbox’s website back in October (see that haul HERE). I had tried one of the shades through the Birchbox sample subscription in the past, and really enjoyed it. I decided to try out some other shades as well, and figured this trio would be perfect. Let me show you the Creamy Lip Stains in this trio, and share my thoughts on them.

Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio | Swatches & Review

Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio | Swatches & ReviewHere is a look at the three tiny bottles in the trio. They come with a traditional doe foot applicator, which I don’t mind when it comes to liquid lip products. I love the black and gold accents on the caps as well.Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio | Swatches & ReviewI wanted to share with you a one coat swatch of each product on my arm because I wear 2-3 coats on my lips. From left to right is: Sugar, Heartthrob, and Dahlia. You can see that Sugar is the most pigmented and creamy, and Dahlia is the least pigmented. I’ll talk about each formula more in the individualized swatches below, but I do want to point out that although these are all from the same makeup line, the formulas vary a lot. There is no consistency here unfortunately.

Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio | SugarThe first shade in the trio is Sugar. This is the shade that I owned as a sample previously and really loved. It is a beautiful mauve pink that is a ‘my lips but better’ color for me. I applied two coats of Sugar and allowed the first layer to dry before adding a second. I love how opaque and pigmented this lip stain is. It feels nice on the lips, and I know I’ll be wearing it often!

Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio | HearttrobNext up is Heartthrob, a bright red shade. I immediately noticed a difference in Heartthrob’s formula in comparison to Sugar. It is quite liquidy, and I found it really difficult to apply. As you can see from my swatch, clean-up was hard, too. Because these are lip stains, they stain the skin upon application. I’m not a fan of Heartthrob because if a lip product is hard for me to apply and makes a mess, it’s one I’m going to avoid!

Cynthia Rowley Mini Creamy Lip Stain Trio | DahliaLast but not least is Dahlia, a dark berry purple shade. I also had issues with Dahlia’s formula. It was very sheer and took about three coats before I got a full coverage look. It also applied very patchy – you know that creepy ring around the lips look? Yeah, I had a lot of trouble avoiding it! While the end result is quite pretty, I’d rather find a different product that is the same shade with a better formula.

All in all, I’m a bit disappointed with the Cynthia Rowley Mini Lip Stain Trio. I still love Sugar, but Heartthrob and Dahlia didn’t work for me. I recommend picking up a full size of Sugar instead of the trio. The full size is $20, but I stand by its formula and beautiful color. You can purchase it on Birchbox’s website HERE. I’m glad I tried out this trio so you don’t have to waste your money on it!

Zoya Nail Polish Whispers Collection | Transitional 2016

Happy Friday! Today I am super excited to share with you a brand new collection from Zoya Nail Polish. I look forward to Zoya’s new releases, because I know the quality is going to be great and the shades stunning. The newest collection is called the Whispers Collection, and is the transitional line for 2016. That means these polishes are designed to help you transition from winter into spring. Of course, you can wear these nail polishes at any time of year, and with the beautiful picks this year I’m going to be doing just that! Let me show you the gorgeous Zoya Whispers Collection!

Zoya Nail Polish Whispers Collection | Transitional 2016

Zoya – Ireland Zoya – IrelandFirst up is Ireland, a dusty green shade. All of the polishes in the Whispers Collection have a cream formula, which I really love. Ireland is stunning, and is opaque in two coats. I really love green nail polishes, and this one is gorgeous.

Zoya – Lake Zoya – LakeNext up is Lake, a beautiful baby blue polish. Lake has a great formula that is opaque in two coats. While the blue is definitely a paler shade, it is still very pigmented. It reminds me of winter and snow for sure! I also have to mention the high-gloss finish these polishes all have. I’m not wearing a top coat in any of these photos!

Zoya – Misty Zoya – MistyThe next polish is Misty, a taupe nail polish that I would describe as a mushroom shade. Misty also has an excellent formula, and is opaque in two coats. I love neutral polishes in the winter and spring, and I think this is a shade that will look good on everyone no matter the skin tone.

Zoya – Cala Zoya – CalaNext up is Cala, another neutral polish, this time an off-white, cream shade. Cala has a good formula, but it is a bit on the thin side so I applied three thin coats for opacity. Cala is my perfect neutral polish! It goes really well with my complexion, and can be worn for any occasion.

Zoya – April Zoya – AprilMy favorite polish in the collection is April, a pale pink polish. April’s formula is also a bit on the thin side, so I applied three coats for the opaque look I desired. I’ve tried a lot of light pinks in the past, and the reason I love April so much is because it is more of a subdued pink. I would wear this on the daily, especially at an office job!

Zoya – Eastyn Zoya – EastynLast but not least is Eastyn, a purple polish that is in the mauve family. Eastyn has a great formula that is opaque in two coats. I’m loving this shade of purple! I think it is so refreshing that the Whispers Collection manages to have pigmented polishes that aren’t bright. It’s on trend, and a current favorite of mine for sure!

All in all, Zoya definitely delivers six awesome polishes in the new Whispers Collection! The shades are all absolutely beautiful, and this is a time where I recommend picking up the entire collection because they are so wearable in daily life. You can purchase the Whispers Collection on the Zoya website HERE. These vegan polishes are $9 each or $54 for the collection. I highly recommend them, and can’t wait to wear them again!

My Thoughts on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan | Spolier Free

Happy Thursday! Today I want to share my thoughts on the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. I usually post individual book reviews for each book I read, but I decided I would post a general, spoiler-free discussion for this series instead. I picked up Percy Jackson for the first time in 2015 after hearing how much people love it. While I don’t read a lot of middle-grade books, I thought it would be fun to read this fantasy series while I was studying for the bar. I knew it would be easy to get through, and also entertaining. I did read the first three books of this five-book series in May, but it wasn’t until December where I finally picked up the last two. Percy Jackson took me on an epic adventure, and I want to share it with all of you!

My Thoughts on Percy Jackson and the Olympians

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series follows 11-year-old Percy Jackson. Percy is a good kid, but he always seems to get into trouble. The series opens when Percy is on a field trip with his class, and all of a sudden his math teacher turns into a monster! It turns out Percy is a half-blood, which means his dad is a God. Percy goes to Camp Half-Blood, which just happens to be located in Long Island, New York. There he learns more about the mysterious world of the Greek Gods, and meets a wide array of characters.

The first book, entitled The Lightning Thief, was my least favorite of the series. While I really enjoyed Percy as a character and first-person narrator, the book is so derivative of my beloved Harry Potter that it actually made me angry! I spent the majority of the book grumbling about how everything in the novel parallels Harry Potter, and was quite frustrated as I reached the ending.

Nonetheless, I continued on with The Sea of Monsters, book two in the series. While it still had Harry Potter undertones, I really liked the new characters introduced to the reader. I also loved how author Rick Riordan wrote a middle-grade story that discusses the importance of accepting those who are different than ourselves. Thus, I picked up book three, The Titan’s Curse directly after finishing the second book. The Titan’s Curse was a turning point in the series for me. It broke away from the pack in terms of the Harry Potter similarities, and while I don’t remember too many details of the story, I knew for sure I would finish the series.

As I mentioned above, I took a few months off from Percy Jackson after completing the first three books, mainly because I was busy. That made it difficult for me to get back into the story when I picked up book four, The Battle of the Labyrinth. I ended up listening to the first third of the book as an audio book to help jump back into the world, which really helped. I was a bit disappointed with the fourth book, but the ending was excellent, and I had to find out how the series would conclude.

The last book, The Last Olympian, is by far my favorite. It is non-stop action, and I absolutely loved how all the loose ends got tied up in the end. Because The Last Olympian was so strong, it really gave me a favorable opinion on the series as a whole, and made me want to pick up Rick Riordan’s other books. I definitely look forward to starting The Heroes of Olympus series, which is a continuation of this one.

What I Loved:

  • The well-developed, likable, and relatable characters
  • The incorporation of Greek mythology
  • The adventures and quests
  • Percy’s sassy narration style

What I Didn’t Like:

  • How derivative it is of Harry Potter
  • The predictability (despite it being middle grade)

My Thoughts on Percy Jackson and the Olympians

STAR RATINGS:

The Lightning Thief: ★★★

The Sea of Monsters: ★★★★

The Titan’s Curse: ★★★★

The Battle of the Labyrinth: ★★★★

The Last Olympian: ★★★★ 1/2

Overall, I highly recommend the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, especially if you enjoy middle-grade fantasy books. If you go into it prepared for Harry Potter similarities at the beginning, then you will like it more that I did from the start. You can pick up a box set of the entire series on Bookshop.org HERE. Let me know in the comments if you’ve read this series, and what your thoughts are! Please use a spoiler disclaimer at the start of your comment if you are mentioning anything that could spoil another reader.
