October 2013 Favorites!

Happy Tuesday! I am so excited to bring you my first ever Monthly Favorites post. One of my favorite bloggers, Love for Lacquer, inspired me to start sharing my favorite products with you every month. It’s a great way to share some of the items I use on a daily basis that might not make it onto the blog for a full review, or simply highlight my current obsessions. Let me share my favorites for the month of October!

NAIL POLISH

IMG_3434 IMG_3437I received Julep Char in my October PopSugar MustHave Box [review HERE] and I am blown away by its beauty! The dark blue color is stunning, and the formula is flawless. I wore it for nearly a week in October, which is a long time for me. I highly recommend it!

HAIR

IMG_3303

I’m also obsessed with The Wet Brush that I got in my October PopSugar Box! It is a miracle for my fine, tangly hair. I even tried switching back to a regular brush after using this, and I could definitely tell the difference. It might sound weird to have a holy grail hair brush, but this is definitely mine!

BLUSH

IMG_3450 IMG_3451A splurge product that I’ve been loving is Benefit Hervana, a gorgeous boxed blush that looks really natural. Plus, it has an amazing smell! If I’m reaching for a blush, it’s been Hervana. I definitely want to try out more Benefit blushes, too!

EYESHADOW

IMG_3453 IMG_3454You’ve heard me say a million times that I rarely wear eyeshadow. Well, I recently picked up the Physician’s Formula Canyon Classics palette and I can’t get enough! The shadows are great quality for an affordable price, plus they are really natural looking. The colors are swatched above in a clockwise rotation beginning with the top left corner. I’ve never actually worn the grey shade, but the rest are amazing!

MASCARA

IMG_3459 IMG_3461I love my drugstore mascaras, but the Manna Kadar Extreme Curl Mascara has been my go to this month! I got it in my October Wantable Box [review HERE] and I can’t get enough of it! The formula is just perfect for my lashes, and I’ve worn it nearly every day in October.

FOOD

IMG_3462I’ve been on a huge peanut butter kick this month! In fact, I devoured over half of this jar in October! You can grab 365 Organic Crunchy Peanut Butter at your local Whole Foods. It’s affordable, and tastes amazing! Plus, if you’re a vegetarian like me, this is a great way to get some protein.

SONG

Maybe it’s the native New Englander in me, but Ylvis’ new song Massachusetts is amazing! The tune is catchy, the lyrics are hilarious, and I just can’t get enough. I’ve had it on repeat since it came out!

EXPERIENCE

IMG_3440One of the most exciting moments of the month was getting to meet one of my favorite YouTubers, Meghan of Strawburry17. She and fellow YouTuber Arden Rose had a meet-up at the Nintendo World store here in NYC, and I just had to go! It was so great getting to talk with them, and both were so nice. If you haven’t checked out their YouTube channels, be sure to do so. I know you’ll love their videos!

And that concludes my October Favorites! Before I go, I wanted to share a new social media site that I joined! It’s called Luvocracy, and is a Pinterest-inspired website that you can shop from! I’ve curated my October Favorites into a collection, making it easy for you to purchase anything you see above. Plus, you’ll get a $10 credit when you sign up! Visit my profile HERE.

I hope you enjoyed this post! Keep a lookout for one of these at the end of every month, and make sure to let me know what your favorites were this October!

Subscription Sunday | November Julep Maven Box

Happy Subscription Sunday! It’s been a couple months since I shared my Julep Maven Box with all of you, and I’m excited to show what was inside my November box. I decided to go with the Boho Glam style this time around, and I’m pretty happy with what I got. Here’s a sneak peek of everything inside my November box.

IMG_3511As you can see, I got two nail polishes, a lip gloss, and a sample of Julep’s Luxe Repair Skin Serum. I will say, I am disappointed that the serum sample is the extra this month. Julep used to include really great extras, but the past few months they just haven’t been as good. I hope that turns around!

IMG_3512 IMG_3515The first nail polish in my box this month is Alexandra, an off-white creme polish. Alexandra’s formula was a bit thick, and prone to streaks. WIth carefully application, I got a smooth finish in two coats. Alexandra is not my personal favorite polish, but if you love neutrals I think it is a good choice!

IMG_3518 IMG_3521The other polish in my box is Aisha, a deep, berry creme polish. Aisha has a perfect formula that applies well and is opaque in two coats. The color is just stunning, and right on trend for this fall. Aisha is definitely one of my new go-to colors this season! I highly recommend it!

IMG_3539 IMG_3541Last but not least, Julep included a lip gloss this month in the color Charming. I wasn’t too excited to receive this, but I was so surprised to discover how much I love it! First, the gloss smells amazing – just like vanilla cupcakes! But that’s not all! The color is a gorgeous “my lips but better” shade, and it feels so nice and creamy. I can’t get enough of it!

All in all, I really like my November Julep Maven Box! While I’m not too excited about Alexandra, I’m loving the other products, and plan to use them again and again! Not only do I recommend this Julep Maven subscription program (which is just $19.95 per month), but if you shop right now you can get everything on the Julep website for 50% off during the company’s Friends & Family sale! Use code GOCRAZY through tomorrow, November 4, 2013, and you will save 50% off your order! If you shop the sale, be sure to let me know what you get!

Subscription Sunday | October Birchbox

Happy Subscription Sunday! It’s my first time reviewing just Birchbox, but as you know I cancelled my subscription to Ipsy last month (for more on why, see THAT post). While I did miss receiving some extra goodies in the mail, I think sticking with Birchbox is the best choice for me. Let me show you what I got in my October box!

IMG_3402This month Birchbox’s theme is Beauty Buzz. It’s designed to help explain the newest trends and buzzing products in the beauty world!

IMG_3403Moving on to the goodies inside! Here are my first three items.

  • POP Beauty Aqua Lacquer in Flowering Fuchsia – $14.00 – This lip gloss is a surprisingly wearable pink shade that gives your lips just a hint of color. It has a minty smell, and a bit of lip plumper in it. Overall, a great product!
  • ChapStick Hydration Lock – $3.29 – With winter on the way, you can never go wrong with some lip balm! Plus, Birchbox threw in a $1 off coupon for my next Chapstick purchase. I’m sure this will get lots of use!
  • Alison Raffaele Reality Base Foundation – $0.38 – Okay, so my retail value for this foundation sample is approximate since there was no indication of how much product is in there. But this tiny tester will be enough for just one or two uses. I will say that this is a perfect match for my skin, though. I will keep you updated!

IMG_3406My last two products came in this fancy, Tiffany blue box!

TOTAL RETAIL VALUE: $27.19

RATING 1-5 (1 BEING WORST, 5 BEING BEST): 3

OVERALL OPINION: This definitely wasn’t my favorite Birchbox, but the good news is I got five products that I know I will use. I would have liked a larger foundation sample, and another product to make up for the Liz Earle duo counting as two. Otherwise, I’m happy with the samples, and will use them up!

What did you get in your October Birchbox?! Let me know in the comments! If you’re not a Birchbox member, sign up HERE. It costs just $10 per month, and has an amazing rewards program. I highly recommend it!

Subscription Sunday | October PopSugar MustHave Box

Happy Subscription Sunday! Today I have a somewhat sad post – it’s my last PopSugar MustHave Box. While PopSugar is definitely my favorite subscription service, it’s also the most expensive. I was willing to make room in my tight budget for $35 per month, but I got an email from the company saying they are raising its prices to $39.95 come November 4, and I just wasn’t willing to pay that much. Thankfully, the October box is a great way to honor my love for PopSugar. Let me show you the amazing products!

IMG_3301First up are three Must Have Beauty products! The first item is a nail polish duo from Julep that contained the Freedom Polymer Top Coat and Char, a beautiful blue polish. I personally think the Freedom Top Coat is horrible, but I’m so happy to have Char. The retail value for this duo is $32!

Next, I got two items from NYX Cosmetics. The first is the Smokey Fumé Palette complete with six eyeshadows, and the next is the Liquid Eyeliner in Black. These products retail for $7 and $6 respectively. I’ve been wanting to try out some NYX products, so I’m really glad to have these!

IMG_3303

The next Must Have Beauty product is The Wet Brush, which retails for $14. This is one of those products that seem really gimmicky, but it actually works! I am so impressed with this brush, and my hair is loving it. I highly recommend this product!

IMG_3306Now onto Must Have Fashion! First is the Gorjana Charity Bali Bead Bracelet. Not only do I love the hot pink color, but 100% of the proceeds for this $45 bracelet is donated to Breast Cancer research. Super cute, and a great cause! As a special extra this month, PopSugar threw in a $20 promo code to Stitch Fix, a website I’ll have to check out. Plus, I also got some cute bobby pins from Jane Tran that retail for $12.

IMG_3308My favorite item in my October Box is The Can’t Cook Book by Jessica Seinfeld. I feel like this book was made just for me! I struggle with cooking, and this book is so well-written and includes amazing graphics and directions. Plus, there are a lot of vegetarian recipes that fit my lifestyle. I can’t wait to try it out! This book retails for $27.99.

IMG_3309Last but not least is a Must Have Food item from The Crispery. This Halloween Crispycake is a huge treat! If you love marshmallows, this is for you. It retails for $3.95!

All in all, I’m glad my last PopSugar MustHave Box was a great one! The total retail value was $167.94, and I’m loving the items. If you have room for PopSugar in your budget, I highly recommend this box. It’s a great variety, and is so exciting to get in the mail. Plus, if you sign up before November 4th, you can lock in the $35 price by signing up for a 3-month subscription. You will pay in advance, but use code MUSTHAVE10 to get $10 off your purchase HERE. Let me know what you think of PopSugar MustHave in the comments!

Halloween Week | My Top 10 Halloween Movies

Happy Friday! I wanted to close out Halloween Week here at Adventures in Polishland with something a little bit different! Halloween is a great time to break out the holiday movies, and I thought I would share my favorites with you. Here are my Top 10 Halloween Movies!

10. Halloween

Halloween-michael-myers-10927807-900-621

I don’t like scary movies, but Halloween is a classic! I remember watching it at my friend’s Halloween party in high school. This is perfect for those who can’t handle anything too frightening, but still want a scare.

9. The Addams Family

They’re creepy and they’re cooky, and they’re hilarious! The Addams Family is a great movie to watch with your family on Halloween. I love Christina Ricci as Wednesday!

8. Young Frankenstein

Young Frankenstein is one of my all-time favorite movies, and is only number eight on this list because I want watch it all year long! If you need a laugh, this is the perfect film. My favorite scene is Puttin’ on the Ritz!

7. The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a cult classic. I love to do the Time Warp at least once per year! Keep in mind this movie is for older audiences, but it’s definitely a must for Halloween.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is such a fun movie with great music. Plus, it’s perfect to watch right through the Christmas season as well! My favorite song is What’s This?!

5. Beetlejuice

If you’re looking for something delightfully scary, Beetlejuice is a must! Who doesn’t love the Shake Senora scene?! This is another great family film.

4. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

No holiday is complete without the Charlie Brown special. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is sweet and charming, and has some great moments. I hope you don’t get a rock trick-or-treating this year!

3. Garfield’s Halloween Adventure

Garfield’s Halloween Adventure is one of the most underrated Halloween movies. I just love this holiday special, including the music! Grab some candy, candy, candy while you watch this one!

2. The Halloween Tree

Another lesser-known film is The Halloween Tree, based of off a Ray Bradbury novel. My brother introduced this film to my family when I was younger, and it’s just a wonderful story replete with friendship and Halloween history!

1. Hocus Pocus

My number one favorite is none other than Hocus Pocus! I’ll never forget the first time I saw it at my friend’s sleepover party in second grade. It put a spell on me, and I’ve loved it ever since! I’ve seen Hocus Pocus so many times I can recite the whole movie, but it doesn’t stop me from watching it several times per year! I hope you love it as much as I do!

Make sure to let me know what your favorite Halloween Movies are in the comments! Have a fun and safe Halloween!

Subscription Sunday | Wantable October Box

Happy Subscription Sunday! Today I have a new to me subscription box to share with you from Wantable.com. If you are tired of receiving sample size products in your beauty subscriptions, I definitely suggest Wantable. After taking an in depth beauty profile quiz, Wantable will put together a box of 4-5 full size products for you every month from high end beauty brands. Let me show you what I got in my October box!

IMG_3235 IMG_3237Here is the first peek inside my first Wantable box! I couldn’t believe how fast it arrived to me as well – I placed the order on a Monday and it was in my mailbox on Thursday! My order also came with a detailed print out that listed the answers from my style quiz, as well as information for all of the products I received. I found the sheet very helpful!

IMG_0531The first item in my box is the Japonesque Angled Foundation Brush. This brush retails for $25, and is perfect for traveling or every day use. I’ve never used a foundation brush before, so I’m excited to try this one one. It looks like it is amazing quality!

IMG_0532The next product I received is the Bésame Cosmetics Brightening Violet Powder. This is a translucent loose powder that completes any makeup look. I just love the cute packaging, and this even comes with a little powder puff! The retail price is $22.

IMG_3246I always love receiving nail polish in my subscription boxes! This one is Michael Marcus Once You Go Matte, and is a black nail polish with a matte finish. I’ve tried a few polishes from this brand, and I do like it. Michael Marcus retails for $15 per polish.

IMG_3249Next up is the Manna Kadar Extreme Curl Mascara in Black. At first I was a bit disappointed to receive a mascara, since now I have way too many, but when I tried this one I was stunned! I’m loving it! This is one of the best mascaras I’ve tried in a long time, and I can’t wait to use it more. This product retails for $19.

IMG_0533The last full size product in my box is the Cailyn Cosmetics Red Tint lip stain. I like that this product is more of a berry shade than a bright red, and that it is so easy to apply. Beware, though, because this truly is a stain and doesn’t even come off with makeup remover! This product retails for $13.

IMG_3255As a bonus, Wantable through in a sample of the Skiin Instant Skin Tightener and Line Filler. This product is supposed to tighten skin and be an alternative to cosmetic surgery. I’m not sure what I think about that, but it’s great to have a bonus sample nonetheless!

All in all, I’m impressed with my October Wantable box! The retail value of my box is $94! What I really like about Wantable is that you are getting items really tailored to your personal likes and dislikes, and you know that everything will be full size. You can also choose to subscribe to Wantable for $36 per month, or buy a box whenever you wish for $40. I really think this is a great value, and I highly recommend it! Wantable also offers an accessories box, an intimates box, and a limited edition Halloween box! To shop, simply click the image below. Let me know what you think of Wantable in the comments!

Ipsy v. Birchbox: Round Seven | September 2013

Happy Subscription Sunday! It’s time for the battle of the beauty subscriptions with another Ipsy v. Birchbox post. I’ve really enjoyed these monthly reviews, but this will actually be the last one (at least for a while). Make sure to read through to the end to find out why!

IMG_3080First up is my Ipsy Glam Bag. September’s theme is Classic Beauty, and the cosmetic pouch this month is blue with a black lace print. I definitely think the bag is cute, but not my favorite that I’ve received. Let me show you what is inside!

IMG_3082 I will describe these products for you from left to right.

  • Elizabeth Mott It’s So Big Mascara – $8.00 – I love mascaras, but how many can a girl own? I got another mascara sample from Ipsy just last month. Eventually I will get around to trying this out!
  • Cailyn Tinted Lip Balmin Big Apple – $19.00 – I’m no stranger to Cailyn now thanks to these subscription services. This is a tinted lip balm in a bright red color. I love that it comes with its own lip brush, but red lips are not my go to. This will be nice for special occasions.
  • Freeman Beauty Paper Face Masks – $5.97 – I’ve been wanting to try paper face masks for a long time, so I’m super happy I got these. Unfortunately, my first try was a disaster! The mask was dripping everywhere, and it didn’t fit my face well. Plus, my skin burned after just a few seconds of having it on. I will give the others a try, but I did not like my first experience!
  • NYX Eyeshadow in Pure Gold – $4.50 – This eyeshadow is a nice, shimmery gold color, and I have been wanting to try more NYX cosmetics. I don’t wear eyeshadow often, but I’m happy to try this out.
  • Starlooks Obsidian Kohl Eye Pencil – $12 – This is the second black eyeliner I’ve received from Ipsy, so now I am stocked up for a while, especially since I rarely wear eyeliner. I’m debating whether or not to even open this to be honest!

TOTAL RETAIL VALUE: $49.47

OVERALL OPINION: I’m pretty bummed with this month’s bag, even though it has a high retail value. I keep getting the same items over again, and the same brands. I am very happy to get the face masks, even though I didn’t like the first one. Now I know what I think of them!

RATING (1-5, 1 BEING WORST AND 5 BEING BEST): 2

IMG_3075Now moving on to my September Birchbox! This month the theme was Heritage, but I find that Birchbox themes are pretty open ended.

IMG_3077Again, I’ll describe the goodies from left to right.

  • Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream – $6.00 – I have wanted to try this hand cream for so long after hearing a bunch of beauty bloggers rave about it. I’m not disappointed! It smells amazing, and is not greasy. I might have to save up my Birchbox points to get the full size.
  • Davines This Is a Sea Salt Spray – $10.80 – This product really intrigues me! After one try, I’m pretty impressed. It helps give your hair beachy waves without looking frizzy. I’ll have to give this another go soon!
  • Yes to Blueberries Cleansing Facial Towelettes – $2.13 – I love makeup remover wipes, and can’t wait to try these. The sample size is great, with eight wipes. I think I’ll save this for travel! I know I love the Yes to Cucumbers towelettes, so these should be nice, too. Plus, I love getting a product I can easily repurchase at the drugstore if I like it.
  • RUFFIAN Nail Lacquer in Hedge Fund – $10 – You already know how much I love this polish! I wrote an entire review on it HERE.
  • Yes to Grapefruit CC Cream – N/A – While foil packets are never my favorite item, this CC cream is my monthly extra, so I guess I can’t complain! I’m not able to determine the value, since there is no size amount on the packet, but the full size is $15.99.

TOTAL RETAIL VALUE: $28.93

OVERALL OPINION: The retail value of this month’s box may not be as much as Ipsy’s, but I am loving the products! The nail polish is amazing, and I really wanted to try the hand cream. Plus, I know I will use the makeup wipes.

RATING: 4

There you have it! My winner for the month of September is Birchbox! After seven months of subscribing to both Ipsy and Birchbox, I’ve decided to cancel my Ipsy subscription. Not only did it only win my battle round one time, but I am not enjoying the products as much. My decision to cancel was made easy – when my credit card information changed, I was never ever to change it on Ipsy’s website! It seems every time I check, they are always in “Billing Mode”. I took this as the opportunity to cancel and move on. I will still be continuing with Birchbox, and will post those unboxing reviews each month!

You can subscribe to Ipsy HERE and Birchbox HERE. Each service is $10 per month.

Subscription Sunday | September PopSugar MustHave Box

Happy Subscription Sunday! It’s time for what has easily become my favorite subscription service, PopSugar MustHave! Yes, this box is a whopping $35 per month, but I honestly believe it is so worth it. This month I happily received some items that I’ve been wanting to purchase, but just hadn’t got around to it yet. It was so great to get those items in my box, plus some more goodies. Let me show you what was in my September PopSugar MustHave Box!

IMG_3039First up is a book entitled P.S. You’re Invited… by Erica Domesk that features over 40 do-it-yourself projects. I am so excited to receive this book! I love DIY projects, and this book has some really unique ideas. Plus, it is a smart book, which means there are corresponding videos to watch online. I can’t wait to try out some of the projects! This book retails for $26 (but try Amazon for $17!).

IMG_3043Next up is the Botanical Coaster Set from Rifle Paper Co. I was desperately on the hunt for a cute but affordable set of coasters, but I couldn’t find any that I liked. I’m absolutely loving this floral pattern, and now I can stop using napkins as coasters! This set of eight retails for $16.00.

IMG_3049I was also looking for a great diffuser for my room! Imagine my surprise when this amazing, $46 diffuser from Barr-Co was in my box! This scent is a mix of milk, oatmeal, vanilla, and velvetier, and is so amazing. It’s light enough that it’s not overpowering, yet strong enough that my room smells perfect. This diffuser is definitely a Must Have product for the home!

IMG_3046The next item is a set Kitsch Headbands. These are basically yoga-style hair ties in headband form! A set retails for about $11.99, and I think this is a great item for the box. I also got a $25 gift card to Shoptiques, an online store. I can’t wait to spend it!

IMG_3047Last but not least, we have the food items! Yum! First is a pack of Sharkies, organic energy sports chews. Basically, these are like fruit snacks that give you a burst of natural energy. They were delicious, but so sticky. Be careful when eating them! I also got a bar of That’s it. This was so good, and just an apple and pear bar. I would definitely buy more of these. The retail prices for these items are $1.48 and $1.67 respectively.

All in all, my September PopSugar MustHave box has a total retail value of $128.14! Not only did I get two items that I was looking to buy, but I got yummy snacks that I’ve already enjoyed, and some bonus goodies as well. This box is the best! I highly recommend it. If you’d like to join, simply click HERE and enter code REFERFRIEND at checkout to get $5 off your first month. You will love it just as much as I do!

Subscription Sunday | August Love With Food Box

Happy Subscription Sunday! Today I am reviewing the August Love With Food Box. While it is a bit late, I really wanted to tell all of you what happened with my August box. When I first received it at the beginning of the month, it unfortunately was a disaster! A cup of salsa had leaked everywhere, ruining some of the box. I snapped a photo and emailed customer service. Not only did they send me a replacement box, but they refunded my money for the month of August as well! It did take a while for the replacement to show up, which is why this post is so late. I think it’s really important that Love With Food’s amazing customer service was shared!

IMG_2984Here is a sneak peek of what the August Box looked like. It was Backyard BBQ themed!

IMG_2988

  • Sahale Snacks Fruit & Almond Crunchers – I actually haven’t tried these yet, but it’s a mix that you can pour in yogurt or enjoy on its own. Sounds like it will be yummy!
  • Project 7 Save Mints – I got mints from this brand in a PopSugar box and loved them! The packaging is so cute, and the mints taste really good. I was happy to get another tube.
  • Aunt Sally’s Creamy Original Pralines – Oh my! This is so delicious! I am thinking I need more of these because it was that good.

IMG_2989

  • Rip van Wafels Caramel Filled Amsterdam Wafel – Yum! These little wafels can be placed over a hot beverage like tea so it gets soft to eat. I loved this so much!
  • Dizzy Pig Dizzy Dust – Unfortunately this is the one product that is not for me since I don’t eat meat and this is a dry rub. It says you can use it as a spice packet in general, but it’s not really my thing.
  • Harvest Snaps Snapea Crips – I love these as well! I’ve tried them before, and I already repurchased two bags of these. I highly recommend them.

IMG_2985Last but least is a bag of BOPS Sea Salt Crisps. These were good, too, but I don’t think I would repurchase them. I prefer other chips better!

All in all, I did enjoy this box and the great customer service I received from Love With Food. I never got to try the salsa after all, because that wasn’t included in my replacement. While I do love this program, and think it’s fun to get these goodies every month, as of right now I did cancel my subscription for financial reasons. If you can afford the $10-12 per month, I do highly recommend the service. I will definitely consider joining again when I have the money! If you’d like to join, use code FBGIFT at checkout and your first month will be just $2! You can join Love With Food HERE.
